A:1. You need to have at least 550 (old scale)
of Toefl score. For your GRE, it varies. To play safe, aim at
1200. Most Chinese/Taiwanese students are weak in Verbal and strong
in Aptitude tests. A combination of at least 1200 is recommended.
2. Ivy League schools are not DIFFICULT, but they are very competitive.
Whoever applies usually thinks that he/she is outstanding among
his/her peer. Before you decide to go for a good name, check if
the Ivy League schools are suitable for you and whether they have
the right kind of program for you.
3. Unless the school specifies it, work experience is not required
in applying for graduate school. However, when they ask for work
experience, normally they want the real kind of experience--experience
that shows you can work independently.
While you choose a good school to attend, good schools also choose
good students--that is, students who have shown distinguished
performance and promise of good development. For that matter,
they not only look at your grades, but your training (whether
it was vigorous or marginal), your proven judgment, your perception
of the field and your instructors' evaluation, etc. Good grades
alone do not guarantee anything just because many universities
here have inflated their awarding of grades. On the basis of their
previous records, the American
universities (particularly the top ones) will discount the grades
of certain schools here.
