這兩天吵得相當兇的一則科技新聞就是,全球出現第一隻叫做食人魚的手機病毒,會透過藍芽裝置散播。資訊安全公司指出,這隻病毒並沒有惡意的攻擊密碼。

俄羅斯安全軟體公司Kapersky實驗室的發言人表示,這隻名叫食人魚的蠕蟲,是由捷克和斯洛伐克的病毒撰寫者組織「29a」的成員發出,這隻病毒是衝著Kapersky實驗室和美國的防毒軟體公司賽門鐵克(Symantec)而來。對於能夠以藍芽的途徑散播病毒,食人魚的作者相當自豪。

食人魚蠕蟲試圖利用手機的無線短距藍芽(Bluetooth)的連接方式,從一個手機傳播到另一個手機。它可以對環境進行掃瞄,尋找其他依靠藍芽技術的設備。換句話說,如果你的手機具有藍芽設備,而且中了食人魚蠕蟲,碰巧你的身旁也有人在使用具有藍芽功能的手機,嘿嘿,對方也會在不知不覺的情況下「中標」。

手機銷售量以百萬計的諾基亞(Nokia)最倒楣了,因為,該手機內建的軟體會被食人魚蠕蟲攻擊成功。不只如此,包括Nokia在內,還有Panasonic、Siemens等品牌的藍芽手機,都有可能受到感染。食人魚病毒最早在歐洲被發現,所引發的災情還不算什麼,台灣目前尚未有災情傳出。

由於食人魚病毒的病毒檔案CARIBE.SIS運用EPOC作業系統上常用的副檔名SIS,很容易讓使用者誤以為接到了什麼新遊戲,興匆匆的打開簡訊後,就中毒了。

這隻病毒出現,顯示未來病毒可能會利用藍芽裝置,在電腦、手機或其他各類智慧型家電間傳播。雖然具有威脅性,但是,由於藍芽傳輸的距離很短,頂多只能在周圍10公尺之內發動攻擊,而且,各家藍芽設備的平台不儘相容,所以,要經過這個途徑感染病毒,還真的是得碰運氣咧!

A group of underground virus writers has showed off what is believed to be the world's first worm that can spread on advanced mobile phones, but security software companies say the virus had no malicious code attached.

The worm, named Cabir, was sent to security software firms Kapersky Lab of Russia and U.S.-based Symantec by a member of 29a, a group of virus writers from the Czech Republic and Slovakia who pride themselves in creating "proof of concept malicious viruses," Kapersky Labs spokesman Denis Zenkin said.

"This is the very first version of a network worm which propagates via mobile phones," he said on Wednesday.

The worm is designed to work in smartphones running on Symbian and Series 60 software, Symantec said on its Web site.

This software is used to power millions of Nokia phones, such as the popular 6600 model.

Nokia was not immediately available to comment.

The worm is not regarded as dangerous because even if it spreads it carries no code that destroys files or executes other damaging operations, the security software firms said. The virus attempts to jump from phone to phone by using the handset's wireless short-range Bluetooth connection. It scans the environment for other Bluetooth-enabled devices.

Once it has found one, it sends itself disguised as a security file. The file must be accepted by the mobile phone owner and then installed before it can propagate.

Mobile viruses will become more dangerous when they can spread without human intervention, said Matias Impivaara, business manager for mobile security services at Finnish security software firm F-Secure.

"The main (turning) point will be when the virus-writing community knows the software well enough... to find holes," he said.

"The information about the (Symbian) operating system is very close to the hands of the virus writers.... (Cabir) could be a trigger to start developing these ideas earlier."

A spokesman at London-based technology firm Symbian said that, unlike personal computers, it was not possible to penetrate the software of its smartphones without approval.

"But we can never say it's not going to be possible. Smartphones have been designed... as open, programmable networked devices," he said, adding that users should be careful before accepting to install new software.

比照像手機還要炫的手機

對現代人而言,換情人的速度,搞不好都沒有像換手機那樣頻繁和快速。

從以往巨無霸外觀的大哥大,到後來開始比迷你的新手機之外,現在的手機比的不只是聲光效果,還得把多媒體的功能加入才算。

現在,照相手機還算流行的了。不過,就在不久的將來,迷你型的硬碟可能又要為手機工業和市場帶來另外一番革命。

日本的東芝集團和日立集團,目前都投入了大量的資金和人力,試圖尋求新的技術,將迷你硬碟置入手機裡頭,如此一來,手機將有更好的聲光效果。未來一支手機至少有4GB的微型硬碟容量,不僅可大幅提升多媒體影音功能,還可整合現有MP3隨身聽、錄音筆,「炫」的程度,恐怕連數位相機都比不上。

南方匯通(GS Magic)和日立、Toshiba是目前主要的微型硬碟廠,其中,GS Magic和東芝集團都將開發體積更小的0.85吋硬碟樣本,甚至預計明年開始量產。這款0.85吋的迷你硬碟主要針對未來3G手機而設計,也就是未來3G手機的影音除了傳輸外,更可儲存和讀取,讓手機持有者隨時拿手機寫日記。未來3G手機的潛力,十分驚人。

日本最大的通信公司NTT DoCoMo和KDDI集團,「玩」手機的歷史已經超級久了,很早以前,他們就開始為客戶能夠藉由手機上網鋪路。對於未來的手機能夠進步到什麼樣的空間,他們給予無限的期望。而且,硬碟市場未來的利潤,是和硬碟的體積成反比的。隨著硬碟迷你化,這塊市場的大餅卻愈畫愈大。

目前小型記憶卡和微型硬碟市場十分看好,從蘋果電腦的iPod席捲MP3隨身聽市場,以及數位相機的普及,就可以略知一番,一旦微型硬碟的穩定度能夠保持下去,Flash的記憶卡售價恐將難逃崩盤的命運。

An inspired combination of two of the most popular gadgets in recent years, mobile phones and digital cameras, resulted in an even hotter product, the camera phone, generating replacement demand across the globe.

Next comes an attempt to add the newest marvel, the miniature hard disk drive (HDD), to the cellphone.

If technological hurdles are overcome, a phone that can act as a miniature video player and store some 1,000 songs could hit the market within a year, analysts and industry sources say.

The spread of the technology, which has made possible Apple Computer Inc's iPod music players, is expected to give a boost to makers of small HDDs such as Toshiba Corp and Hitachi Ltd

"Demand for hard disk drives totals 300 million units a year. Cellphones sell some 500 million. The sheer size of the potential market excites disk drive makers," said Yukihiko Shimada, an analyst at UFJ Tsubasa Securities.

Speedy Internet access and a flat-rate tariff are likely to encourage cellphone users to download "rich content" such as CD-quality music, high-resolution video clips and advanced game software, all of which require an ever increasing amount of storage capacity.

"The most likely scenario is that flat-rate services would kick-start the distribution of music and videos to cellphones, which would need hard disk drives," J.P. Morgan analyst Kazuyo Katsuma said.

NTT DoCoMo Inc and KDDI Corp, Japan's largest and second-largest wireless operators, have started offering flat-rate Internet access services in the past year.

"I see some high-end models coming out with HDDs as early as in the current business year (to next March)," Katsuma said.

DoCoMo expects terrestrial digital broadcasting intended for mobile phones, due to start in 2005, to boost demand for large-capacity memory devices to store and play back TV programs, but says it has not decided what type of memory devices it will use in its phones for that purpose.

Flash memory chips are the primary storage device for cellphones at present, but small HDDs are at least three to four times more cost-efficient.

NEXT BIG THING?

Battle has already been joined for dominance in miniature HDDs, seen as the fastest-growing part of the $24 billion HDD market.

Toshiba, which supplies 1.8 inch drives for Apple's original iPod, plans to launch stamp-sized 0.85 inch drives, certified by Guinness World Records as the world's smallest HDD, later this year, targeting the market for cellphones and other mobile devices.

Hitachi makes matchbook-sized one-inch drives which are used in mini iPods and can be squeezed into cellphones.

Crowding the market further, Seagate Technology HDD Holdings , the world's largest maker of HDDs, aims to launch its own one-inch drives, possibly by later this year.

HDD parts manufacturers such as TDK Corp, the world's largest maker of HDD heads, and Nidec Corp, which controls 70 percent of the global HDD motor market, are also gearing up for the launch of HDD-equipped cellphones.

"We are ahead of the competition in technology to put more data in less space ... We welcome the trend (to put HDDs in handsets)," TDK President Hajime Sawabe said in an interview with Reuters in May.

Besides boosting storage density, manufacturers face other challenges to create commercially viable HDDs for mobile phones, such as improving the disk drives' ability to withstand the impact when a handset is dropped onto a hard surface.

As HDDs contain moving parts, they are generally more vulnerable to such shocks than flash memory chips. But there has been some progress by disk drive makers on that front.

"When not in motion, our hard disk drives are now no less shock resistant than a flash memory, although when being accessed they still have some weakness," a Hitachi spokesman said.

The question of shock resistance does not rule out the use of HDDs in cellphones, since their functionality is already proven in iPod and other portable devices.

But some market watchers say HDDs' tendency to be less durable than chip-based products when handled roughly and their greater power consumption are likely to limit their role as a memory device to specialty models rather than as a mainstream memory device that will replace flash memories.

"Chances are that a few models with HDDs will be launched to test the market. But I think it's unlikely at the moment that HDDs will become a standard feature of every mobile phone," said Ichiro Morimoto, a senior consultant at Nomura Research Institute.
