When the lone Reuters correspondent in Greece in 1896 sent out his telegraphed dispatches about the revival of the Olympic Games, he was more concerned about correctly naming the European royalty present than the results of events.

This year, at the Athens Games, Reuters will have nearly 200 journalists, photographers, camera people and technicians using every computer trick possible to get every result and get every one right in a matter of seconds.

This year, like several major news organizations, members of the Reuters team will go through a course on how to protect themselves in the unlikely event of a nuclear or chemical weapons attack on the Games. The International Olympic Committee has also for the first time taken out insurance against disruption to the Games from terrorism, war or earthquake.

Similarly, I have great sympathy for Athens' bad luck in being in the wrong place at the wrong time as regards security.

The simple fact is that wherever the first summer Games were held after the September 11 attacks would face a security nightmare.

My hat is off to the organizers on security because they have made all the right moves including overcoming Greeks' fierce pride to ensure there will be international help.

On another front, the Games ironically may already have achieved what the international Olympic movement has long sought -- an end to debate about whether Olympics should always be held in the same city and obviously as their birthplace, Greece would be a natural home.

After undergoing seven years of seeing their city torn up with non-stop building works costing billions of dollars, there is no Greek I know who would want to go through the same again for at least another 100 years.

The work has transformed Athens and in my view has been worth every euro for how it has updated a much underrated European capital which was long in need of development.

I believe that just as the 2000 Games in Sydney changed the largest city in my country from a tired metropolis to the glorious sight it is now, the same will happen in Athens.

To sum up, anyone who has the chance to see the Games and doesn't take it is missing the experience of a lifetime.

Forget the security worries, forget the reports of delayed works. Greece is an awesome land and Greeks are wonderfully welcoming people.

To me, Sigmund Freud summed up the wonder of Greece with his comment on his first visit to Athens, marveling that the city of antiquity, democracy and learning actually existed.

"Amidst the temple ruins, looking out over the blue sea. A feeling of astonishment mingled with my joy. It seemed to say: 'So it really is true, just as we learned at school!"'

Poor Ticket Sales

a Concern with Month to Go

Athens Olympic organizers called on Greeks Tuesday to snap up unsold tickets to avoid greeting the world with empty stadiums when the world's biggest sporting event comes home in a month's time.

With foreigners staying away and millions of seats unsold, Athens chief Games organizers Gianna Angelopoulos appealed to locals to pick up the slack and put on a good show in front of the world's cameras.

"Tickets at fair prices are still available ... this is a once in a lifetime chance for people to experience the Games," Angelopoulos said in an interview with local radio stations.

She told listeners that tickets for heats featuring homegrown track heroes Costas Kenteris and Ekaterini Thanou were still available for as little as 10 euros ($8).

Organizers have denied reports that two-thirds of seats allocated to national Olympic committees and sponsors have been returned but the flood of tickets still available signaled otherwise.

By the end of June officials said only 1.95 million of a total of 5.3 million seats had been sold.

Tourism analysts said that security concerns and high prices for flights and accommodation had scared off foreign visitors, prompting a 15 percent slump in year-on-year visitor figures.

Months of campaigning to reassure nations sending athletes to the Greek capital that unprecedented spending would safeguard the August 13-29 Games were hit this weekend by reports of a row with a key hi-tech supplier.

According to reports in daily To Vima the government has delayed payment for a multimillion dollar communications system to a U.S.-led consortium.

The group failed to deliver the system which will act as the eyes and ears of security forces by the end of May, citing construction delays at venues.

Public order ministry officials refused to comment on payments and said the system would be up and running by the time of the Games. Greece is spending one billion euros on an Olympic security master plan put together under advice from a seven-nation panel including the United States and Israel.

A blackout Monday across the entire city added to worries, with critics noting that a repeat of the outage would leave the costly security installations literally powerless.

Organizers are hoping some of the Midas touch of Greece's European champion soccer heroes will rub off on them after requesting they run a collective Olympic torch relay leg on August 8 across the new Rio-Antirio bridge.
