2006-2007 Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence (SIR) Program
These programs are designed for U.S. institutions that do
not usually have a chance to host visiting scholars from abroad,
such as liberal arts colleges, regional undergraduate universities,
community colleges, and minority-serving institutions. The
scholars teach regular courses, give campus-wide lectures
and talks to community organizations, help initiate international
student exchange programs, and contribute to curriculum development.
The institution can name the countries from which they would
like to have a scholar.
Two institutions have specifically requested a scholar from
Taiwan for the 2006-2007 academic year:
1. Guilford College, located in Greensboro, North Carolina,
is requesting a scholar from China, or Taiwan who will teach
two courses each semester. In the first semester, the courses
would be Introductory Chinese Language and Contemporary Chinese
Culture; in the second semester, Introductory Chinese Language
II and Contemporary Chinese Literature in Translation. Additionally,
the scholar would guide Guilford faculty members as well as
public high school teachers on how to create effective and
appropriate revised syllabi to integrate the study of China
into their classes. The scholar would also be involved in
a range of non-teaching activities, including curriculum planning
in East Asian Studies, advising students in the major about
career choices and continued study in Asia. The period would
be from August 1, 2006, to approximately May 31, 2007.
2. Santa Fe Community College, in Gainesville, Florida, is
requesting a scholar from China, Taiwan, or Hong Kong who
would devise and team-teach two classes- one on the culture
of contemporary China and the other on economic development
in China and East Asia. The SIR would also serve as a curricular
consultant in two additional courses in Asian Humanities and
on The Developing World. The school thus hopes that the scholar
will be “a generalist with broad cultural interests.” The
duration of the grant would be one semester, from December
15, 2006 to May 15, 2007.
Grant Benefits:
Each scholar will receive a monthly stipend of US$2500-2,900;
round-trip international travel; an excess-baggage allowance;
basic accident and sickness insurance; a settling-in allowance;
a small professional allowance for books, services and professional
travel within the United States; and a dependent allowance
for up to two qualifying dependents. In the case of full academic-year
awards, the grant also provides round-trip travel for one
qualifying dependent.
