(Try spending time, not money)
  &;

Every year, the day after Thanksgiving brings millions of people out of their beds early in the morning and then out to shop. Entire extended families go out to malls and shopping centers in packs, with envelopes stuffed with clipped coupons and rebate certificates, armed with wallets full of credit cards. Whether it is because of the early bird specials or just family tradition, many Americans celebrate the unofficial first day of the holiday shopping season dubbed "Black Friday." However, since 1992 many other people have started a new tradition, Buy Nothing Day.

Since its inception, Buy Nothing Day has brought awareness to tactics of over-consumption. Although many major media outlets decline advertising the day, it is gaining support. Now, the campaign is headed by Adbusters and is recognized in 65 countries. Last week, thousands across the globe protested Black Friday and the following Saturday by simply not shopping. Participation varies from those staging protests at malls to those who stay home and simply do not spend any money.

Over-consumption is something that is affecting our society today more than ever. Recent studies have found that American households' consumption has increased by nearly 50 percent in the last two decades. Often the more we buy, the more we want, and, worse, the more we think we need to lead happy lives.

While Buy Nothing Day is a jab in the stomach of shopping traditions, it isn't making as large of an impact as it could be. In reality, buying nothing on one particular day is not difficult to do at all and shouldn't be considered entirely progressive. The campaign should encourage people to get more creative with their gift giving by giving second hand gifts or homemade presents.

College students are familiar with the pressures of giving quality gifts without spending much money. Thrift and craft stores offer many great options and ideas for meaningful presents.

This year, try spending time, not money.

(Buy Nothing Day targets Black Friday, consumerism)
  &

While many others rose as early as 3:30 a.m. Friday to shop, Janet Reifenberg snoozed peacefully at home.

"I avoid the stores today, 100 percent," said Reifenberg. "For me, it's not about 'Go out and grab as much as you can.' "

The East Lansing woman is one of thousands of people across the country celebrating Buy Nothing Day.

It encourages shoppers to stay home on the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving, a subtle protest to consumerism.

"We're buying three times more than we used to, but studies show we're not happier," said Kalle Lasn of AdBusters Media Foundation, which founded the event in 1992.

"We want people to think about the consequences of consumption."

Those, he said, include environmental issues such as global warming and the stress that comes from keeping up with the Joneses.

He said he's been pleased with the response to the campaign.

"Buy Nothing Day. Right from the start, there was something magical about those three words," he said. "People would stop in their tracks and say, 'What?' It hit them as being weird and right at the same time."

In some cities, Buy Nothing Day supporters scheduled events. People brought fabric scraps to an Olympia, Wash., event, then stayed to create quilts and embellish jackets. In New York City, people were invited to protest by pushing empty shopping carts around a huge Bed, Bath and Beyond store from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Friday.

Reifenberg is one of the moderators of the Freecycle discussion group at Yahoo.com, where people list items they'd like to get for free or give away. No money changes hands. She posted a note about Buy Nothing Day for Freecycle members.

On Friday, Reifenberg planned to load a box with Christmas items, then offer it up on freecycle for members to pass around. She'll then focus on enjoying time with her family, which includes daughter Stephanie, 12, son Alexander, 18, and husband John.

"We'll hang around here and do a few things," she said.

The bill at the end of the day: $0.

(Groups protest at Bay Area malls)
  &

Black Friday, known as the biggest shopping day of the year, has everyone heading to the mall, including protesters.

Members of Indian People Organizing for Change will gather at the Bay Street Mall in Emeryville "the day after 'Unthanksgiving'" to tell the public that the mall is built atop a sacred Ohlone Shellmound burial ground, according to Morning Star Gali. Gali says bodies were buried right beneath where Victoria's Secret now stands.

While the mall has erected granite art walls that "graphically incorporate Ohlone history and that of the Shellmound," and even named the malls' main streets "Ohlone Way" and "Shellmound Street," Ohlone tribe member Gould said in an ideal world she "would like to see the mall removed and to see the cemetery put back where it was."

Gali said she expects about 100 people to show up at 12:30 p.m. at the mall located at the intersection of Ohlone Way and Shellmound Street for the protest.

In San Francisco, the Group in Defense of Animals will urge shoppers not to buy products with fur today in Union Square. Self-described Jewish feminist group Bay Area Women in Black will march in silence on Market Street to bring troops home. Also, a group called Codepink will surround malls and stores, appealing to people not to shop until "troops from Iraq are brought home for the holidays."

While protesters may deter a few shoppers "it is kind of a familiar occurrence. Right now there are some people protesting outside Macy's but it doesn't really affect us," said Levi's store manager Andy Cross at the flagship store in San Francisco's Union Square.

Cross said Levi's opened at 8 a.m. and has had steady business since then. According to Cross, business is definitely better than it is on an average Friday.

"It always helps because there is a tree in Union Square and our windows are decorated and we have candy at the register, so a lot of people come it just to look at the atmosphere," said Cross who noted that the Levi's "skinny jean," was his best selling item for both men and women this year.

(Glasgow Buy Nothing Day)
  &

A detachment of the Clandestine Insurgent Rebel Clown Army took to the streets and shopping areas of Glasgow on Saturday. Dressed as Doctors, and sporting stethoscopes and CD's stuck to their foreheads, they went along two of the main shopping streets carrying large white Boxes of Nothing, urging passers by to 'Buy one get one free' - 'Special Offer - absolutely nothing at all' and 'For one day only - absolutely nothing'

The smiles of many people as they passed down the streets were worth a thousand words - some were bemused, others just smiled as the made-up Retail Therapists continually dropped their Nothing Boxes - or formed queues to pass the boxes over road crossings.

With much mirth and jollity the Retail Therapists played their way down to St Enochs Square - where they cajoled people to come over to the Swap Shop which had been set up by members of the SAORSA G42 collective. The Swap Shop was busy with people - especially children - exchanging key-rings for books - sunglasses for light bulbs - indeterminate objects for clothes - while the Retail Therapists urged the crowd to 'Take the stress out of Christmas shopping, don't do it - at least for today Buy Nothing Day' Those taking a break from were given the once over by the Retail Therapists. In what one Doctor called 'Operation Operation' - at ease shoppers were inspected with play stethoscopes, ear trumpets and so on, and in severe cases were diagnosed as suffering from Extreme Consumption. They were ordered to take the rest of the day off and get some quality time in bed.

While a couple of Therapists went into the nearby GAP shop and urged people to tell people they did not have to make those purchases to be happy, others attempted (unsuccessfully) to put big Boxes of Nothing into the GAP window. One Therapist taped a computer game handset to a nearby Police Information bow and urged people to com and have a free game. While kids took turns to zap the Police box - buttons were pushed to change the screen displays of maps and lovely police infos- better than sitting at home alone doing much the same thing. Eventually the Retail Therapists disappeared into the now darkening streets, still passing empty boxes one to the other, and still urging passers by to find something better to do than shopping with their free time.
