| 艷陽加勒比，天天都是地球日Commentary: Every day is Earth Day in the Caribbean | |

每到4月22日，全球歡慶一個新環境運動的誕生。在這天，地球村各個角落都為了向「地球日」致敬而舉辦獨特的慶祝活動，不過，在加勒比海地區，地球日可不單只是個值得紀念的日子，多年來，它已在這裡紮根，蓬勃長成加勒比觀光業的企業道德。 在環保意識抬頭的潮流中，地球日終於在1970年問世，而加勒比各大私營飯店為維護環保盡心也已逾10載，其中，不少地方商家都參與「綠色地球」及ISO 14001等國際認可的旅遊業生態標識，在評估環保、汙染及消費需要同時有效管理業務，確實降低對地球的傷害。目前「加勒比旅店協會」共有47家「綠色地球」認可企業，領先全球，他們保護空氣、土壤和水道不受有毒化學物及廢料的污染，使用環保能源、減少溫室氣體排放量，在這裡，終年都是環保日。 他們的努力世界都看見了：涼鞋海灘酒店集團、巴哈馬的堤亞墨渡假村、阿爾蒙酒店、多明尼加的三河生態渡假村，這些都是享譽全球的綠色度假勝地。 而他們的每個小小努力，對生態環境都意義重大。最近才推出「天堂蜜月」套裝的知更鳥旅館，與「牙買加保存發展基金會」密切合作，回報旅客消費估計會產生的溫氣體，基金會將比造等量氣體栽植樹木，試圖達到碳平中和。「牙買加保存發展基金會」平時以衛星畫面控管森林砍伐，並大量栽種生長速度快、雖然經濟價值較低但富絕佳生物多樣性的樹種。 而三河生態渡假村則是在水資源和廢料問題上用心。所有廚房花園的廢棄物都轉作肥料之用，連灌溉的水源都取自廚房、浴室使用過的「灰水」，既不用使用化學肥、又滴水不浪費、同時也不需要額外的垃圾掩埋場，這樣環保的循環利用，一舉三得。 加勒比對旅遊生態如此重視，讓大氣中移除的溫室氣體甚至比他們排放的還多。巴貝多首相亞瑟在3月14日的預算演講中就提出，凡參加「綠色地球」等國際旅遊生態評估標準的私人企業，就得以減稅150％，大大鼓吹國內綠色經濟。 此外，當地民營「加勒比旅店協會」及國營「加勒比旅遊組織」也聯合舉辦一連串會議，集結當地業者及其歐洲合作組織，以實際層面商討如何應對氣候變異、如何控管溫溫室氣體、同時扶持加勒比地區順利發展。不只是旅遊業者，加勒比的每個住家也在居家、交通、生產上用心，和企業聯合展開全面綠化運動，朝更潔淨、更安全、健康的永續環境邁進。 http://www.caribbeannetnews.com/news-1079--6-6--.html Each year, April 22 marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. Many countries around the world celebrate this day with special activities and community events. In the Caribbean, the hotel and tourism industry is taking Earth Day way beyond a commemorative day, to a philosophy for doing business responsibly. Looking back, Caribbean hotels have been responding to climate change for more than a decade. Several have led the regional private sector in mitigating environmental impacts through their participation in Green Globe or ISO 14001 certification programs. In fact, the Caribbean leads the world, as a region, with 47 Green Globe certified properties. These 47 properties, all members of the Caribbean Hotel Association, are transforming Earth Day into Earth Year-Round. Their operations have become progressively more efficient and competitive, while contributing to a sustainable future for all of us - protect our air, soil and waterways from toxic chemicals, harmful substances, and excess waste; reducing greenhouse gases responsible for global warning by investing in clean energy. Their work to protect our earth has earned them not just accolades in our own backyard, but international recognition as well: Sandals and Beaches; Tiamo Resort in Bahamas; Almond Resorts; Amsterdam Manor Beach Hotel in Curacao; and 3 Rivers Ecolodge in Dominica, among many others. Their practices are exemplary - significant, yet simple. Take the Hotel Mocking Bird in Jamaica, which recently announced its "Heavenly Honeymoon" package, whereby the hotel offsets their guests' calculated carbon footprint by contributing to the local Jamaican Conservation Development Trust - an entity that uses satellite imagery to work against the deforestation of a national park, planting fast-growing trees with little lumber value, but excellent for biodiversity. Meanwhile, at the 3 Rivers Ecolodge, all kitchen and garden waste is turned into compost, to grow organic food on the property, irrigated in turn by treating gray water and then re-using it - a smooth chain that in swiftly does without the use of chemicals or fertilizers and reduces water consumption, as well as waste that would otherwise end up in a landfill. This approach to doing business, along with other efforts by tourism stakeholders across the region, contribute to making the Caribbean tourism industry one that removes more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than it adds. As an exercise in awareness, take a look at the tourism industry in your country; you will find that much is being done - but much is still to be done. The Prime Minister of Barbados, Rt. Honorable Owen Arthur, in his Budget Speech of March 14th 2007, leads the way among Caribbean leaders by promising to transform Barbados into a green economy, with more responsible and sustainable consumption. He has given great incentive for the private sector to participate by providing a tax write off of 150% of the cost of participating in the Green Globe standards and certification program for travel and tourism businesses. Moving forward, private and public sectors - the Caribbean Hotel Association and the Caribbean Tourism Organization, are jointly driving a series of meetings with travel stakeholders and partners in Europe to consider in practical terms how the current international focus on climate change will impact upon the Caribbean - the issues, the challenges, and the opportunities for the hotel and tourism industry in our region. In the long term, our aim is to ensure that the schemes to manage the carbon - emitting impact of travel, rather than putting our region at a disadvantage, fosters the growth and development of Caribbean nations. Here at home, this is ultimately everyone's business - a holistic approach, where household, road transport, agriculture, and other industries' practices are incorporated into efforts to for a cleaner, safer, healthier environment and a sustainable future for all of us. Together, we can grow a greener economy that is based on protecting, respecting, and working within the boundaries of our region's natural systems and finite resources. |

地球日當天，一位蒙古放牧人之子靠著對大自然的熱忱和付出，為亞洲贏得驕傲。長期為Onggi河運動付出的孟克巴雅，在這天下午於舊金山歌劇院獲頒2007年環保金人獎──民間環保運動的最高殊榮──5位受獎人中，孟克巴雅是唯一的亞洲人。 活動單位「亞洲協會」﹙Asia Foundation﹚及「環保金人獎」將每人頒發12萬5千美金以玆獎勵，並希望他們將這筆獎金繼續投入環保工作。 現年40歲的孟克巴雅投身河川保護計畫已10餘載，成功「治退」當地37間礦業工廠中的35間，阻止對生態破壞極嚴重的挖礦工程進駐當地珍貴水源Onggi河盆地。 2001年開始，他帶著超過2千名志工組織跨省圓桌會議、並大動作發布電台及電視節目，喚起民眾環保意識。2006年他並在亞洲協會的經濟及技術支援下，成立蒙古自然保護聯軍，串聯11個河川保護運動，共同捍衛水源免於礦業、林業、農業及旅遊進駐的傷害。 「我們選中孟克巴雅，因為他對蒙古的責任礦業和水源保護影響重大。他不只和政府立法機關交涉有功，同時也教育大眾，讓他們知道水資源的重要、以及每個人都擁有保護水源的民主權。」環保金人獎創辦人古德曼表示，「這個獎項是對他願景和個人付出的認同。」 「亞洲環境的健康就是全民健康的基礎。」亞洲協會會長貝盧特認為：「作為受獎人，孟克巴雅先生更實現了我們的長遠目標─從草根層面開始，代領著個人和組織共同創造健康繁榮的亞洲。在此我們以這個獎項表示恭喜、同時也讚許他對永續環境的辛勞。」 「美國亞洲協會」蒙古分會主要在連結公民及環保份子，為環保決策、喚醒環保意識努力，為公私機構和NGO團體溝通平台，此外，亞洲協會也把校園拉進來，讓師生和政府、企業組成分水嶺網絡，監控河域不受挖礦作業污染，並回報環境數據。 http://www.mongolia-web.com/content/view/967/2/ The Asia Foundation and TheGoldman Environmental Prize announced today that Tsetsge Munkhbayar ofMongolia, founder of a mass citizen's movement to protect Mongolia'snational waterways, has won a 2007 Goldman Environmental Prize -- the largest accolade in the world for grassroots environmentalists. The $125,000 annual award recognizes outstanding individuals who are combating pressing environmental challenges and was created to allow these people to continue their important work. A current grantee of The Asia Foundation's San Francisco-based Environment Program, Mr. Munkhbayar is the only Asian recipient, among five awardees. He will be awarded the prize at an invitation-only ceremony on Monday, April 23 at 5:00 p.m. at the San Francisco Opera House. Mr. Munkhbayar, 40, successfully pressured 35 of 37 mining operations working in Mongolia's Onggi River basin -- a precious drinking water supply for rural Mongolians -- to permanently stop harmful, ruinous mining and exploration activities. Beginning in 2001, and with a volunteer staff of more than 2,000 people, Mr. Munkhbayar's Onggi River Movement organized multi- province roundtable discussions and launched high-profile radio and television campaigns to build public awareness. Then, in 2006, he inspired the creation of the Mongolia Nature Protection Coalition -- a collective of eleven separate river movements in Mongolia actively fighting destructive mining, forestry, tourism, and agriculture activities. "Munkhbayar was chosen because of the huge impact he has had on the issue of responsible mining and water protection in Mongolia. Not only has he worked with governmental leaders in crafting appropriate legislation, but he has also made it a point to continue educating the public about their water resources and their democratic right to have a voice in protecting them," said Richard N. Goldman, founder of the prize. "His award acknowledges his vision and personal risk." "The health of Asia's environment is fundamental to the health of all its citizens," said Doug Bereuter, president of The Asia Foundation. "As a grantee, Mr. Munkhbayar epitomizes our long-standing commitment to empowering people and organizations on the grassroots-level to creating a healthful, prosperous Asia. We congratulate and commend him on this significant award and his lasting work." About The Asia Foundation's Support to Mr. Munkhbayar Beginning in early 2006, The Asia Foundation supported the creation of the Mongolia Nature Protection Coalition with financial grants and technical assistance, such as workshops in organizational management. The Foundation's first grant to Mr. Munkhbayar and the Onggi River Movement was made in 2004. Asia Foundation in Mongolia The Asia Foundation's new environmental initiative in Mongolia addresses responsible resource use by supporting a strong coalition of citizen activists to advocate for increased transparency and accountability in environmental decision-making, and to promote public awareness and civic engagement in environmental issues. The Foundation facilitates constructive public, private, and NGO sector dialogue on environmental policy and legal formulation, on the enforcement of laws and regulations, transparent licensing and permitting, and on oversight which includes community and student engagement in water quality monitoring. By facilitating open, participatory, and productive discussions between stakeholders, the Foundation is promoting environmentally responsible mining and resource use that protects human and environmental health, and fuels economic development and prosperity. In addition, the Foundation is supporting the development of new markets for "green" gold and other metal and minerals products from Mongolia with cross-sector stakeholders. The Foundation is also engaging citizens and students to collect environmental data through a pilot watershed-monitoring network comprising of citizens, government, industry, and teachers. |

The ceremony was held on the eve of Earth Day, a globally significant day on which Tetra Pak renewed its pledge to minimise its impact on global warming, theme for Earth Day this year. “The objective of the carton collection competition was to raise awareness on the benefits of recycling and to highlight the recyclability of Tetra Pak juice and milk cartons. We were overwhelmed with the enthusiasm of the students and hope that this competition will inculcate environmental awareness among the students", remarked Amar Zahid, Managing Director Tetra Pak Arabia. “It is vital to get the message across that recycling beverage cartons and waste is no longer just a fashionable option but an essential part of a new lifestyle we have to adopt", he added. Over 24 local and international private schools in Jeddah competed for the 1st, 2nd and third prizes which included stationery vouchers worth SR10,000, SR7,000 and SR5,000 respectively. The first prize went to Al Waha International School for collecting 116 kgs of empty Tetra Pak juice and milk cartons whereas Green Hills International School and Al Andalous Private School were the other two winners collecting 99 kgs and 96 kgs empty Tetra Pak juice and milk cartons respectively. "This program is a bold and encouraging move on Tetra Pak's part. It clearly shows that this is a company interested in investing in the environment and society," said ?Dr. Abdullah Naseer, the national coordinator for Arab Network for Environment and Development (RAED). "I am sure this pilot will be a success and I look forward to see such programmes implemented kingdom-wide." 位於旁遮普省費特格拉‧薩賀的瑪塔格伊里大學，由新聞系與大傳系的學生舉行了地球日的慶祝活動。 好地球俱樂部的資助人，知名的教育學者歌摩漢‧欣格‧瓦里亞表示，全球暖化可能會在不遠的未來造成許多嚴重的問題，如冰河溶解、臭氧層缺口和炎熱天氣造成的疾病增加。 新聞與大眾傳播學系系主任阿曼普里特‧蘭哈瓦指出，「好地球俱樂部」是由該校新聞學系的學生所組織的社團，目的在喚醒大眾關心環境議題。她表示，這正是思考問題的關鍵時刻，否則未來的子孫永遠不會原諒我們。 費特格拉‧薩賀扶輪社的主席達爾敏德‧欣格‧烏布哈表示，種樹儘管只是個人小工作，卻是可以拯救地球環境的主要力量。他認為人的一生至少該種下一顆樹來改善環境，而旁遮普目前只有6％的的地表為林地，值得大家關心。 「好地球俱樂部」的主席阿姆立特‧欣格表示，現在地球上仍有無數的人在呼吸著骯髒的空氣，許多已開發和開發中國家水源不足，而印度的河流和湖泊也無法讓魚兒悠遊。 Mata Gujri College, Fatehgarh Sahib Monday observed Earth Day at a function organised by students of Journalism and Mass communication. Noted Educationist Gurmohan Singh Walia, patron of the Good Earth Club, said that Global warming would cause a large number of serious problems in near future and its effects could be seen in shape of glacier melting, delepting of the ozone layer and increase in diseases due to hot weather conditions. Amanpreet Randhawa, Head of Journalism and Mass Communication Department informed that Good Earth Club is an organization formed by the students of the Journalism Department of the Mata Gujri College to create awareness among the public regarding environment. She said that it was the right time to think about this problem otherwise the coming generations would never forgive us. Dharminder Singh Ubha, president, Rotary Club, Fatehgarh Sahib said that tree plantation was one of the small but a major effort on individual level to save the environment on the earth He said that each person should plant and nurse at least one plant in his life. He further said that it was the matter of deep concern that instead of 33 percent, the state of Punjab had only around six percent area under forest. Millions of the people on the earth were still breathe dirty air, most of the developing and developed countries had no potable water and our rivers and lakes were unsafe for fishes said Amrit Singh, president of the Good Earth Club. Ramandeep Kaur B.A first year student, who is general secretary of the Club said that the people like Waterman of India Rajinder Singh and Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal had shown us to make this earth worth living so we should make all out efforts to keep the environment clean and green for the better future of our generations.
