What We Have Learned in a Tour Guide Training Program
Several days ago, we received the message that there was a series of narrator and tour guide training program related to the Old Bridge Wetland Park organized by the Old bridge Association. The four-day training camp including (1) a brief introduction of the Old Bridge Wetland Park and the spirit of volunteers talked by Mr. Lin, Li-Hui, (林立輝); (2) a presentation about the cultural and historic spots in the Park by Mr. Wen, Cho-Chi (溫卓淇); (3) a concept on how to build a successful constructed wetland given by Mr. Huang, Chiou-Huar (黃秋華); and finally (4) an insight to the mechanism of water purification by aquatic plants and sediments presented by Dr. Huang, Yi-Chu (黃益助).

After finishing the training courses, the impression what we have learned is it is really a hard work to manage and maintain the 120-hectare marshy park. Mr. Chang, Kuei-Wei (張桂維) offered a practical tour guide training around the scenic spots in the Park. The volunteers from the Association are very warmhearted. They spend their own time to preserve the environment. There we saw many kinds of birds and some of them are endangered and protected species. We went cycling around the Park with Mr. Lin who explained the concept of the scenic spot – a miniature park. We both think it is a very creative and brilliant idea. He also told us the reason why they built the model of scenic spots of Dashu township. We learned the history of the Old Bridge and knew how difficult the construction engineering was.

A huge grass lawn is available for residents and tourists to play, cycle, picnic, fly a kite, and walk the dogs there. However it is amazing there are no trash cans in the park because volunteers want visitors to bring their garbage home. After all, we learned a lot of introductory knowledge from the training camp to become an elementary tour guide and narrator these days. We also understand the importance to preserve the environment and believe that nature is the best teacher of humankind.
