Igor Stravinsky: Rite of Spring
It is difficult to imagine that nearly 100 years ago to the day Stravinsky's ballet and orchestral work The Rite of Spring premiered in Paris, inciting unprecedented demonstrations and riots among audience members. The stage manager used the lighting, intermittently turning the lights on and off, to placate the audience.
This piece put Stravinsky on the world map, with its bold rhythms and wildly primitive dissonant harmonies, so full of life, as well as its use of polytonality. All of the piece's unresolved tension is somehow full of beauty for it provides one with the sense of a rejuvenating strength found in life after death.
In the original manuscript, Stravinsky wrote that where rhythm exists, music exists, just like life exists where there is a pulse. Stravinsky studied composition with Rimsky-Korsakov for three years and the two became the best of friends. This amicable relationship between teacher and friend allowed a rebirth of sorts in modern classical music, writing a new chapter in music history.
