Russian composer Mussorgsky, one of "The Five," was obsessed with history from the time he was a child. He wrote the opera Khovantchina based on historical sources, but never completed the opera due to an unexpected early death. It was eventually revised and finished by Rimsky-Korsakov.
Russian composer Alexander Glazunov completed for his friend Leopold Auer (1845-1930) in 1904 the only violin concerto that he ever wrote in "A" minor, and conducted the orchestra during its premiere. The fact that the concerto was dedicated to a friend gives it special significance. There are no pauses or numbered sections in the concerto.
Anton Arensky used Russian folk music as source material for the concerto, but was also greatly influenced by Tchaikovsky, which can be observed in the delicate beauty of the melodic lines he wrote. It is a great pity that Arensky, like Mussorgsky, drank heavily in his later years, which was detrimental to his health and brought about an untimely demise.
Prokofiev continues Russian classical music traditions in Scythian Suite, but also includes extreme dissonance in the suite and boldly added an extra movement. The suite also has certain avant-garde elements, which caused it to have scathing reviews around the time it was composed. Prokofiev undoubtedly fused together the frigid indifference of modernism with the norms of traditionalism, eventually making him one of the most prolific and greatest Russian composers of the 20th century.
